Marone, a computer technician, had no connection to activism or the law, but he and Friedmann shared a history of clinical depression. He recalls talking to Friedmann about it. Marone had sought therapy and medication. Friedmann, he told me, claimed that he’d solved his affliction “by thinking through it.”
